What is algebra readiness?

Algebra readiness is a program that provides mathematics assistance to students in grades   6 - 8 who may be at risk of failing the Algebra I end-of-course test.  the Algebra Readiness program consists of a diagnostic pre-test, tutoring services, and a post-test.

 

Who determines which student should participate in Algebra Readiness?

The school determines which students should be tested and which students should receive the intervention service based upon one or more of the following criteria:

1. Students in grade 6-9 at risk of failing the Algebra I end-of-course test.

2.  Students not successful in their previous intervention programs.

3.  Students who performed below average in their previous year's mathematics program.

4.  Students who did not pass the end-of-course mathematics test.

When do student attend Algebra Readiness?

Students participate in Algebra Readiness twice a week during Physical Education bells for one semester.  Some students may participate longer if necessary.  The student's grade in Physical Education will not be hindered due to his or her participation in Algebra Readiness.

How are students assessed in Algebra Readiness?

Students do not receive a grade in Algebra Readiness.  However, students will receive a pre- and post-test report which measures the student's growth in skill areas and determines the areas requiring further development.

What is the structure of an Algebra Readiness classroom?
  • An Algebra Readiness classroom has ten or fewer students per teacher.
  • The teacher is actively engaged with students at least 90% of the time.
  • The teacher models differential instruction and employs research based strategies.
  • There is a direct match between the student's work and the student's weaknesses.
