School nursing is an exciting and challenging specialty in nursing that requires a varied background in education and experiences within the medical profession. The school nurse provides a wide range of services to the school community, which include students, faculty/staff, and parents. Some of these services within the school setting are: emergency medical care, medication administration, records management required by the state, infection control, processing homebound applications, screening programs, processing and review of student registrations/immunizations and health history, assisting in identifying learning disabled students and assisting in mainstreaming disabled students, liaison within the community for community resources and services, educates the school community regarding health topics and encouragement of healthy living habits, to name a few. I am proud to be a part of such a diverse specialty that has such a wide impact and touches so many people.
