MISSION STATEMENT

The Mission of Hickory Elementary School is to instill the traditions of personal and academic excellence while fostering a lifelong passion of learning by celebrating and promoting the unique abilities of each child in a partnership with a committed staff, supportive parents, and solid community resources.

Our Philosophy

Hickory teachers believe that learning is a lifelong endeavor and that all children can learn. Our fundamental purpose is to ensure that all our children acquire a firm foundation in the basic academic skills of math, English, science, and history. We also want to develop in children a love for reading books, increase their knowledge in technology, emphasize the need for daily physical exercise, and instill an appreciation for music and art. By doing this, we hope to help students continue learning throughout their lives. We believe children learn those skills best in a school where achievement is emphasized, high expectations are held for students and staff, an orderly atmosphere is maintained, and appropriate instructional strategies are clearly defined. Our teachers view each child as an individual who has unique needs and who learns according to his/her own interests, abilities, and experiences. Academic progress is monitored and outstanding performance is acknowledged. The desire to learn is fostered in every child, and students are encouraged to recognize that they have a responsibility for successful learning. The school plays an important role in helping children learn to function successfully in a democratic society, to acquire a sense of their own personal worth and dignity of others, to exhibit self discipline, and to develop a healthy respect for authority along with an uncompromising respect for the rights of others. The school shares with parents the responsibility for educating children. Therefore, mutual support and open communication between parents and the school should result in an effective working relationship that will enable the staff to meet the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical needs of the students.
