Make-up Work

(General Information)

Make-Up Work

Regular school attendance is important to your child's success.  It lays the foundation for good work habits that your child will carry into adulthood.  When a student is absent, there are many missed educational opportunities.  Written work can be made up, but missed instructional time cannot.  Instruction, including explanations, demonstrations, discussions, experiments, and group practice, continues whether your child is present or absent.  Therefore, try to schedule doctor and dental appointments for after school hours and take family vacations when school is not in session.  However, illnesses do occur and children who are sick should not be in school.  Because sick students usually cannot complete their school work until they have recovered, it is the general policy that missed work is given when students return to school.  Parents should write a note to the teacher explaining why the student was absent and requesting the teacher give the student the make-up work.

Work Missed Due to Absences

  • Students will be permitted to make up work because of excused or unexcused absences, including in-school or out-of-school suspensions.

  • It is the student=s and parent=s responsibility to ask for all work missed when absent.

  • Students returning from each unexpected absence have three (3) school days to complete the missed work to receive full credit.  Exceptions may be made for extended absences.

  • On a day a student is absent due to illness, a parent may request make-up work on the day of the absence. That request, however, must be made no later than 8:30 a.m. on the morning of the absence, and the parent may pick up the assignments in the office after 2:15 p.m.  The request for make-up work may not be made on the school=s attendance answering machine or by fax.

  • When work has been requested and left in the office for the parent to pick up, the work will be due the day the student returns to school.  Penalties for work turned in after the return date will be imposed.

  • When a student is absent on the day of a test, but was in school the day before the test, the test will be taken when the student returns to school.

  • Work not made up within 5 days will receive a zero unless the parent and teacher have met and worked out an alternative completion schedule.

Work Missed Due to Vacations and/or Trips

  • Absences due to vacations or trips are discouraged.   However, if they occur, parents may request the work that will be missed at least one week in advance of the absence.

  • When assignments are provided in advance, they are due upon the student=s return to school.  Penalties will be imposed for work that is turned in late. Work not made up within three (3) days of the student=s return will receive a zero.

  • When assignments are not provided in advance, students will have the same number of days to complete missed work as they were absent.  Penalties will be imposed for late work and zeroes will be given for work not completed within the appropriate time line.

  • Absences of more than five (5) days require a parent-teacher conference to discuss make-up work arrangements.  It is the parent=s responsibility to request the conference in advance of a vacation.
